June 2, 2011 – Prelim Searching Pangaea 31

Today I’m starting off with the Pangaea dataset #31, whose article reference was found to be cited by 14 articles in ISI WoS.  I decided to try something that had a few more citations today to see if the databases that had no hits with Pangaea dataset 89 are of any use for this data repository.

First, I repeated the search in WoS (which now has 15 articles citing the article reference) and pulled the bib records into Zotero for easy comparison with other searches.

Database: ISI Web of Knowledge

Searching Topic: Structure of the penultimate deglaciation along the California margin and implications for Milankovitch theory (this is the article reference title)

Results: 1 – cited by 15 articles.

Searching Topic: Oxygen isotope composition of benthic and planktonic foraminifera from ODP Holes (This is the data set title)

Search Engine: Google

Searching Term: “Structure of the penultimate deglaciation along the California margin and implications for Milankovitch theory” (this is the article reference title)

Results: 139 – most of these are abstracts of the article from various online bibliographies.  Although a couple may be articles that cite the article reference, there are too many to sift through them all.

Search Term: “Oxygen isotope composition of benthic and planktonic foraminifera from ODP Holes” (This is the data set title)

Results: 6 – These all lead to the original dataset so nothing new.

Search Term: doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.721804

Results: 2 – both to original dataset

Search Term: “doi: 10.1594/PANGAEA.721804”

Results: 3 – all to original dataset

Search Term: 10.1594/PANGAEA.721804

Results: 4 – all lead to Pangaea datasets, but not necessarily the one I want.

Search Term: http://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.721804

Results: 7 – like yesterday, these just lead to the dataset or citations of the dataset, no reuse of data.

Search Engine: Google Scholar

Search Term: “Structure of the penultimate deglaciation along the California margin and implications for Milankovitch theory” (this is the article reference title)

Results: 14 – 1 article not found in the cited by functions of ISI Wos and Google Scholar – all other refer to article reference or articles found in the cited by function of ISI WoS/Google Scholar

Cited By: 20 – 5 new articles beyond those in WoS

Searching Observations: A total of 21 publications were found that cite the article reference.  Like yesterday, no publications were found searching with the DOI or the weblink to the data (http://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.721804) other than the article reference/ data set when using Google.  All articles but one were found using the cited by functions in ISI Web of Knowledge and Google Scholar.  One additional article was found using Google Scholar with a search for the title of the article reference.
