Preparing for Interviews

With several new data stories in progress, these last couple weeks have proven quite productive. The stories are evolving from one draft to the next as we move through the editing process, recounting tales from our interviewees and tracking down more details to make them really shine. These stories are certainly getting the attention they deserve, but there are many more that remain undiscovered! At present, weโ€™re interviewing more contributors in order to pull those untold stories out into the DataONE spotlight.

Next week Iโ€™ll conduct my first data story interview. After video chatting with my mentor about interview protocol, steps, and expectations, Iโ€™m looking forward to a successful first interview (and many more after that!). Thankfully, I do have some prior experience with collecting interviews, so I have a good idea of what to expect. While this is a comfort, itโ€™s also true that each interview is wholly unique and that adaptability is essential in navigating unpredictable conversation. With a strong list of predetermined questions at my side and the ability to adjust it as needed, I expect the experience of my first data stories interview to be a pleasant one.

In my next post, Iโ€™ll reflect on the interview process and share the details of my experience. Stay tuned!
