{"id":521,"date":"2011-08-14T13:20:48","date_gmt":"2011-08-14T18:20:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/notebooks.dataone.org\/tracking1000datasets\/?p=290"},"modified":"2013-05-09T01:07:24","modified_gmt":"2013-05-09T01:07:24","slug":"week-10-update-a-summary-of-my-internship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/notebooks.dataone.org\/data-reuse\/week-10-update-a-summary-of-my-internship\/","title":{"rendered":"Week 10 Update: A Summary of My Internship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last 10 weeks I have moved this project forward in substantial ways while learning several new tools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things I have completed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An in depth search of 4 datasets during my first week: <a href=\"https:\/\/notebooks.dataone.org\/tracking1000datasets\/2011\/june-2-2011-prelim-searching-pangaea-21\/\" target=\"_blank\">PANGAEA 21<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/notebooks.dataone.org\/tracking1000datasets\/2011\/june-2-2011-prelim-searching-pangaea-31\/\" target=\"_blank\">PANGAEA 31<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/notebooks.dataone.org\/tracking1000datasets\/2011\/june-3-2011-prelim-searching-pangaea-49\/\" target=\"_blank\">PANGAEA 49<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/notebooks.dataone.org\/tracking1000datasets\/2011\/june-3-2011-prelim-searching-pangaea-59\/\" target=\"_blank\">PANGAEA 59<\/a><\/li>\n<li>During my second week i traveled to Bellingham, WA to meet with my mentor, Heather Piwowar, where we developed the data collection plans to make this project manageable during my internship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>We decided to search for data reuse in two ways: 1) Searching full-text for the repository assigned dataset identification number using Google Scholar; and 2) Searching articles that cite the data collection article for dataset reuse. \u00a0These citing articles were collected using ISI Web of Science. \u00a0I searched every article retrieved through Google Scholar, and a randomized stratified subset of 150 articles\u00a0retrieved\u00a0from Web of Science, as this is what time allowed. These <a href=\"https:\/\/notebooks.dataone.org\/tracking1000datasets\/2011\/updated-tagging-structure\/\" target=\"_blank\">tags<\/a> were applied to each article.<\/li>\n<li>I completed both types of data collection for all 10 repositories chosen. \u00a0Links to Google Spreadsheets for each repository including the dataset ID&#8217;s included, the number of citing articles, the Google Scholar Search terms, and number of Google Scholar search results can be viewed in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/notebooks.dataone.org\/tracking1000datasets\/2011\/links-to-our-data\/\" target=\"_blank\">this blog post<\/a>. \u00a0All of the tags applied and the citations of the articles analyzed can be viewed in <a href=\"https:\/\/notebooks.dataone.org\/tracking1000datasets\/2011\/links-to-mendeley-data\/\" target=\"_blank\">our Mendeley groups<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>We also had a poster accepted to the ASIS&amp;T conference to be held in New Orleans in October. \u00a0I created our <a href=\"https:\/\/notebooks.dataone.org\/tracking1000datasets\/files\/2011\/08\/ASIST-2011-Tracking-Poster-PDF.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">poster<\/a> for this conference.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Things I have learned during this internship:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\" target=\"_blank\">Dropbox<\/a> for data sharing<\/li>\n<li>Improved knowledge of <a href=\"docs.google.com\" target=\"_blank\">Google Documents<\/a> for collaborative work<\/li>\n<li>Proficiency with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mendeley.com\" target=\"_blank\">Mendeley<\/a>, and amazing bibliographic control and social networking tool<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to a wide range of scientific journals, articles, and citation styles<\/li>\n<li>Increased\u00a0knowledge\u00a0of maintaining an Open Science Notebook and using WordPress<\/li>\n<li>How to create an effective poster<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Summary of data collected so far:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I put together <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheet\/ccc?key=0AjqvkMdjMpewdFFhczB4czNMRGdQelR3WHZtaHV0Q0E&amp;hl=en_US#gid=0\" target=\"_blank\">this Google Spreadsheet<\/a> which is an overview of data reuse based on the data collection so far. \u00a0This raw data does not take into consideration articles that were labeled &#8220;low confidence&#8221; which will not be included in the final results and it does not extrapolate the Web of Science results beyond the 150 articles that were analyzed for each repository.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last 10 weeks I have moved this project forward in substantial ways while learning several new tools.
