I spent most of this week preparing for the Research Data Alliance (RDA) US Summer Intern Meeting. The meeting was held at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana on Thursday and Friday. I was incredibly surprised at the amount of reading that was assigned before the meeting. I was very grateful that school is over for the Summer and I had some time to devote to the reading.

Spending time with the RDA interns was very interesting, and useful! I will admit, I found myself a bit lost in some of their conversations, many are doing post graduate and even post doctorate work. But it felt good to be around people who are passionate about the academic fields they are pursuing. Coming from the library science world, it was also very helpful to meet and talk to the two librarians working for RDA this Summer. It’s interesting to see in action the types of research opportunities that are available to library science students.

Although I met my mentors last week, It was also really incredible to participate in a lecture delivered by Dr. Greenberg. I have read Dr. Greenberg in some of my classes at DU, and it’s was kind of a library-science-star-struck moment for me (I’ll allow my library-science-nerd to come out in this blog post!)

The RDA meeting also offered some insight into the Metadata Standards Directory, which I will be working on this Summer through DataOne. I had the opportunity to see how the project will crossover from DataOne to RDA. It also helped contextualize the project for me. I have a larger sense of what the project can do, and all the components that are going to fit together to make the directory usable and useful to the science community.

I’m very much looking forward to digging my teeth into this project. This week will be my first week getting to know GitHub and the Metadata Standards Directory page!
